This page lists and describes various railroad-related museums and clubs
in the San Francisco Bay area. Be aware that several local railroad-related
entities have similar sounding names, e.g., the Golden Gate Railroad Museum
and the Golden State Model Railroad Museum are easy to confuse.
| Golden State Model Railroad Museum |
 |
This is our museum, located in Point Richmond, California, in what is known as
the East Bay, i.e. the eastern side of San Francisco Bay. We have three
very large model railroad layouts (N, HO, O scale) and were featured on
the October 1999 cover of Model Railroader magazine. |

| Golden Gate Live Steamers |
 |
Located
in Tilden Park in the hills above Berkeley, California, the GGLS operates
a track system of four gauges: 2 1/2, 3 1/2, 4 3/4 and 7 1/2 inches. The
tracks can accomodate rolling stock built in various scales. Locomotives
are often hand-built and run on coal, diesel oil, propane or other fuels.
They run every Sunday of the year, weather permitting. |

| California State Railroad Museum |
 |
The
California State Railroad Museum is a fabulous museum covering all aspects
of railroading but particularly how railroads have figured in the history
of California. They have tons (literally!) of restored prototype equipment
including Number 4294, a "Cab-Forward" which has to be seen to
be believed. The museum does not have any operating model railroads, though
they do have some dioramas. This museum is located in Sacramento, California
which is approximately an hour and a half due east of San Francisco. Open
daily, 10-5pm. |

| Redwood Valley Railway |
 |
A
15" Gauge 5/12 Scale Narrow Gauge Passenger Railway (trains are 5/12 the
size of a full-size locomotive) that operates in Tilden Regional Park above
Berkeley, California. You can ride on the trains. Check the website for
additional information. |

| Western Railway Museum |
 |
The Western Railway Museum is the most visited museum in Solano
County. They have restored over five miles of the historic Sacramento
Northern high-speed inter-urban electric railroad and operate
historic equipment Saturdays and Sundays year round and Wed. thru
Sun. from Memorial Day to Labor Day. The WRM archive has extensive
technical information and many engineering drawings and thousands of
historic photos which would be of interest and use to modelers. |
